Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue
Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
